'Being the Ricardos'

Poster Being the Ricardos

Shot with Red Ranger Monstro paired with Arri DNA lenses. The story narrows in on one week of the famous 'I Love Lucy' show from the 1950s. DP Jeff Cronenweth: "We decided that the camera movement could be different from what they did back then and the image quality could be better. But your light sources need to be true to what they did because that's what sets the tone of a period piece." About the camera he adds: "I chose to use the RED Monochrome camera: a Ranger with a Monstro chip in it that is dedicated purely to black and white. The pixels have all been changed. It is light and dark, and it is beautiful, beautiful quality."

Red Ranger Monstro

Red Ranger Monstro

RED's RANGER is an integrated Large Format 8K camera system offering an all-in-one system for production use. It features all of the benefits of the MONSTRO 8K VV sensor within a less complex platform for filmmakers. Features like integrated I/O's, 24V power out, shimmed PL Mount and improved thermal performance offer unmatched versatility as well as peace of mind in challenging shooting environments. The camera will ship complete with necessary rigging and support for improved set-up time.

RANGER is capable of handling the rigorous strain and robust power needs of high-end studio productions. Supporting wide input voltage (11.5V to 32V) and more independent SDI and AUX power outputs, as well as an integrated XLR audio input. The camera also boasts a larger fan for quieter and more efficient temperature management.

The monochrome sensor omits the bayer filter, which lets the sensor capture more detail when compared to a color sensor as there is no interpolation of information from adjacent pixels.

RED's MONSTRO 8K sensor can take advantage of full-frame 35mm lenses, and then some, with its 40.96 x 21.6mm surface area. Despite its size, the MONSTRO can be driven up to 60 fps at full resolution. Higher frame rates, up to 300 fps, can be made available by windowing the sensor to lower resolutions. RED measured the MONSTRO sensor as having 17 stops of dynamic range, able to represent both deep shadows and bright highlights in the same frame.

Arri DNA

Arri DNA

DNA is a completely new concept in lens development, pioneered by ARRI Rental in collaboration with visually ambitious cinematographers. Sourcing vintage optics from different historical periods, we embrace unusual image attributes that arouse an emotional response.

Selected optics are rehoused into modern lens casings, with the manufacturing carried out in-house at ARRI Rental. Each lens has its own personality, often customized for individual filmmakers, allowing stories to be told with a new visual boldness.
