DP Armando Salas says the Arri Alexa Mini, which recorded in XQ UHD, is very sensitive and performs well in low-light situations. "Stefan Sonnenfeld and I spent several hours creating and fine-tuning the show LUTs so that I felt very confident about our digital negative. We ended up with a really filmic LUT, not overly aggressive, and I got comfortable with what we could see in the shadows. We lit for those nuances down in the toe of the curve." He shot with Leica Summilux-C and Summicron-C primes, which the cinematographer characterizes as “modern and clean without being harsh and ultra-sharp.”

The  SUMMILUX-C lenses allow the subject to be captured as you see it without significant color temperature shifts or loss of clarity. All colors retain their natural look and feel with special care being shown to skin tones to keep them humane but without looking over sharp or flat. It’s a characteristic called creamy sharpness that can be seen as well as felt in an image.

At T 1.4 and averaging only 1.7 kg per lens, these lenses are the smallest set of fast aperture, purpose-built prime lenses available for cinematography. Their patent focus design allows for a long focus throw even on these compact lenses.

The use of exotic aspherical elements in each Summilux-lens creates a telecentric path of light from the rear element to the sensor. Telecentricity and aspheric correction not only reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing, but also create a more even illumination across the entire field. Add in an already large image circle and the Summilux-lenses are the perfect companions for larger digital sensors like RED’s Dragon sensor.

SUMMICRON-C lenses offer authentic color rendition, natural focus transitions and fall off, and a creamy sharpness that captures everything from actresses to architecture with a humane and true representation. Skin tones remain soft and smooth while hard edges and fine details retain their contrast, which makes these one of the most versatile sets of cine lenses available.

Advances in cine lens design allow the SUMMICRON-lenses to be smaller and more compact than other lenses with comparable performance. Only 4” (101 mm) long and weighing between 2.9 and 3.4 pounds (1.3-1.6 kg), these lenses are perfect for stabilized rigs, aerial cinematography, underwater cinematography, and stereoscopic 3D.

Digital camera sensors are getting physically larger and the SUMMICRON-lenses are ready to perform. Each lens offers an image circle wider than 35mm in diameter, big enough to easily cover sensors from RED Helium 8K S35 and GEMINI 5K S35, Sony and ARRI Alexa f 16:9 mode formats without performance loss in the corners or vignetting.
