By using Sony Venice cameras, which allow the lens and sensor block to be separated from the body, up to six cameras could be build into the F18 cockpit. Light and compact lenses like the Zeiss Loxia and Voigtländer Heliar were used to keep the setup as slim as possible and keep the path of the ejection seat clear. Sony Venice cameras have built in optical ND filter so no matteboxes were needed.

The VENICE Extension System enables cabled separation of the VENICE camera body and image sensor block by up to 5.5m with no degradation in image quality.

The kit consists of a front panel cover, image sensor block case and a 2.7m (9 ft) cable with an additional 2.7m (9 ft) extension cable. The Extension System also has an HD-SDI output and a 24V output for powering accessories such as lens servo motors and monitoring. The Extension System is fully compatible with all existing and future VENICE cameras upgraded to V3 or higher firmware. Used for Top Gun Maverick, to mount six cameras in a jet fighter cockpit.

LENSES

Voigtländer Heliar

Voigtländer Heliar

The Heliar Classic 50mm F1.5 VM is a deliberate counterpart to the high performance lenses of today. It is designed to show a shaping-classic image at open aperture by intentionally leaving aberration. The lens configuration consists of six lenses in three groups, and interprets the original heliartype. In particular, at the F1.5 aperture, a bokeh effect is apparent, creating spherical and comatic aberrations at the edges of the image that would be difficult to create through digital processing. This effect decreases with increasingly smaller aperture and from aperture F4 the Heliar behaves largely distortion-neutral. The overall image effect can be described as picturesque and velvety.

Fujinon Premier

Fujinon Premier

Fujinon HK Premier Zooms are designed for the highest performance cameras. They exhibit minimal breathing when focusing. Image quality is consistent and repeatable. Coatings and elements of all lenses are consistently color matched. The 280 degree focus barrel rotation ensures an expanded focus scale, with accurate and consistent marks.

Zeiss Loxia

Zeiss Loxia

ZEISS lenses stand out with their large rotation angle which enables precise focusing. Changes are immediately visible in the viewfinder. The high-quality focusing mechanism moves smoothly without play, thus also supporting the intuitive interaction with the focal plane. The precise engraving in meter and feet, and the depth of focus scale provide additional support for manually focusing.

One completely new feature of the Loxia lens is that you can ‘declick’ the aperture’s locking mechanism using a tool (supplied) and an adjustment screw on the bayonet surface. This means that for video applications, you can smoothly eliminate any unwanted differences in brightness as you pan the camera.
